I’ve been having this issue with Windows 7 on my desktop computer ever since I installed it last night. Whenever the computer goes to sleep, upon waking, my keyboard and mouse don’t work. Both my mouse and keyboard happen to be PS/2 connections though, so it could be that it only affects those ports and not USB, Firewire, etc. I need to do some testing to be sure.
Also, because none of my inputs work, I have to hard shut down the computer. After I boot back up, the computer tries to restore the last session, it doesn’t just try to log back in. I’m not sure if this is a motherboard issue (I have a feeling it might be), but when it goes back to the login screen, the peripherals still don’t work. I have to literally turn the power supply off in order to get it to do a full boot up. Need to do some investigating as to why it won’t shut down when I press the power button. I suppose it could be a problem with the wiring for the power supply (I had changed the power supply and was messing around with the wires connecting the motherboard to the power button, so there could be a problem there).
Updates forthcoming, any comments/ideas appreciated.
UPDATE 10/24/09:
I have confirmed that all peripherals are affected by this problem. This means PS/2, USB, Firewire, etc. stop functioning when returning from sleep mode. However, it is important to note that they work until just after being woken up, so I can use my keyboard to wake the computer from sleep, but as soon as the login prompt comes up, it stops functioning.
I’m going to try and update my BIOS in order to see if that fixes the problem. I am using a M2N32-SLI Deluxe made by ASUS, so we’ll see if this helps the problem, or changes it.
UPDATE 10/25/09:
I suppose I should add the process of what has been happening lately. After I write my list, I’ll post what I have changed and the effects it has had.
1. I walk away from my computer; it goes to sleep.
2. I return to my computer. I tap the space bar.
3. The display turns back on, showing the login prompt.
4. I try to move my cursor to the password prompt box to type my password. The cursor does not move. Also, the keyboard is unresponsive.
5. Unable to do anything, I hold the power button down until the computer shuts off. I wait 10 seconds.
6. I turn the computer back on. The display says “Resuming Windows.”
7. I am looking at the login prompt again. My mouse and keyboard are still unresponsive. Also, my M-Audio Firewire recording interface shows that it is not receiving any input from the microphones plugged in (there is a green LED that lights up when it is detecting input). Also a USB mouse has the same problem as my PS/2 mouse.
8. I hold the power button down, once again, and shut the computer off. This time, I unplug the power from the computer and hold the power button down the clear the CMOS battery.
9. Plug the power back in, turn it on. This time it actually boots up.
10. I am then presented with the windows boot menu. Select “Start Windows Normally.” Then I see the “Starting Windows” page, followed by the chkdsk screen. I let it do the chkdsk the first couple of times, but now I’m skipping it until I figure the issue out. After I resolve it, I’ll do a final one.
11. I finally get to the login screen with a mouse and keyboard that works.
I tried disabling hybrid sleep mode, but the only effect this has really had is to make it so that when I wake the computer from sleep, it stays on a black screen for about 15 minutes, and then restarts the computer. For whatever reason I can’t remember if the peripherals are functioning at this point.
I also updated the BIOS on my motherboard because I have a feeling that this problem is somehow related to it. I have an ASUS M2N32 SLI Deluxe with Wireless.
